Development from my character designs...
these are my original sketches scanned in... I'll be adding colour to some of these designs which can then be developed into my skateboard designs...

After drawing my characters I started playing around with my designs...
I started layering the drawings over each other to create a pattern which could then been duplicated into a pattern...

I really like these designs, I will definitely be developing them into my skateboard designs...

After researching artists such as kid acne and Tim robot I've been inspired to start drawing my own imaginary characters.... I've started drawing up some character designs which I may be able to develop into my skateboard designs...

Packaging Development:

My original packaging idea was to design a box like net package in the shape of a skateboard deck which would contain my skateboard designs...
after experimenting with my first idea, I've designed a new idea...
This is a 3 part design (like my logo)...

Inside the net package will be my folded skateboard designs joined together at the sides so that they can fold flat and fit inside the packaging...
The skateboard designs will then fit inside a board shaped sleeve, which will then fit into another (slightly larger) sleeve therefore sealing both ends of the designs, keeping them packaged inside...

I designed my logo to look like three skateboards overlapped to create my initials 'JJD'...
I also designed this packaging to be made up of 3 separate parts, all in the shape of a skateboard...
I did this purposefully to try and create a coherent branding between my packaging, Logo & skateboard designs...

Evaluation:

This packaging is perfect for what I need... It can hold my skateboard designs, as well as keeping with the style & branding of my logo...

Now that I know the packaging fits together & all the sizes are correct I can start adding designs to the Net's ready to print...

3D Packaging Development:

While I was researching 3D packaging I found a net package in the shape of a skateboard which I downloaded from:

This Net was designed to be made into a full scale model of a skateboard including the deck, trucks and wheels...

My packaging idea was to have some sort of skateboard deck shaped box which would contain my skateboard designs therefore I wouldn't need the added trucks/wheels this net has...

I used the skateboard net from this design, scaled it onto a4 paper and then proceded to cut it out & build it... By doing this I could take inspiration for my own net packaging design...

This was the finished 'Deck' package...

I tried to add a folded locking device to hold the package together however I wasn't successful as it would need to be added to the original net design before printing...

This prototype helped me to get an understanding of how I could design my own skateboard shaped net package...

Laser Cutting:

We had an IT session with alan last week in which he gave us a task to draw out a bottle design ready for laser cutting the following week...
I drew up the bottle shape using the pen tool on illustrator which was no problem... We then converted our saved bottle designs into coral draw (laser cutting software) and let the laser cutter do the rest...

I took a few pictures of my constructed bottle...

3D PAPER RESEARCH:

heres a few sites I've been looking at for examples of 3D paper manipulating and nets...

http://aqua-velvet.com/2011/03/jiyon-ha-3d-paper-books/

I even found a net for a skateboard, I'll try printing it out and making it then maybe designing my own net for my own 3D packaging... Maybe my skateboard designs could be printed out joined together then folded away inside the packaging... I'll draw up some designs in my sketchbook

Logo Development:

I had a go at creating logo's with my initials on illustrator trying out various font's and styles...

I drew out some logo designs influenced by the cut out logo's I made in the workshop...
I started to draw out some of my favourite designs using the pen tool on Illustrator...

After messing around with a few different designs, experimenting with scale, shape's and colours, I decided that this design would be the best shape for my logo... I'm working on skateboard & character design so I wanted my logo to be bold, simple and easily recognisable.. In my research I looked at skate company logo's so I tried to use the skateboard logo's to inspire and influence my design...

For this design I tried to keep the outline simple... I wanted the outline of the logo to look similar to the outline of a skateboard so that it would relate to my work...
I drew the bottom of both the J's and the curve of the D to look similar in size and scale and to look like the curved ende of a skateboard, therefore looking like 3 half boards overlapping to create my initials for JJDesign...

Development: experimenting with colours and outlines...

This is by far my favourite logo design... I think I'm going to use this shape/design for my logo, I just need to decide which colours/style would best suit...

Logo Development:

In the Logo workshop we were asked to make logo's out of our initials using cut out text... I continued this exercise at home and these were the logo's i produced...

This is my favourite logo out of the group, I designed this with two J's and a D which stands for JJDesign... I'll develop this logo further using illustrator it out then experiment with color and scale...

Kid acne also uses cigarettes in his work, but draws them as a character in his iconic style:
" it’s an analogy for graffiti being a compulsion."
